I was first attracted to “All Star” by Smash Mouth, because of the fun play on words.
Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place
I said ya what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change
I was impressed with their cleverness, but then I realized I also liked the meaning of the words too. Couldn’t we all use a little fuel and little change?
So now this is one of my go to songs when I need some encouragement on a project. When I find myself wanting to skip the steps of progression or when I’m at the point where I need to be brave and do something different to get to the next level, I crank it up.
So much to do so much to see
So what’s wrong with taking the back streets
You’ll never know if you don’t go
You’ll never shine if you don’t glow
Hey now you’re an All Star get your game on, go play
Hey now you’re a Rock Star get the show on get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold
Start with the glow. Do something and the shine will follow.
It reminds me of a quote that I first heard from Steven Tyler, “Fake it, till you make it.” Hmmm. Maybe an Aerosmith song for next month.
