“The boy was beginning to understand that intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life . . .”
The boy here is Santiago, the main character in Paulo Coelho’s bestseller The Alchemist. Santiago’s parents had wanted him to become a priest. Being a priest would make his family proud. But this path did not feel right to Santiago. He knew he could be a good priest, but what he really wanted to do was travel. Santiago wanted to experience the adventures that would come from exploring the world beyond his village. His father, seeing a desire that had once been in his own eyes gives Santiago his inheritance. With this gold he asked Santiago to buy sheep and become a shepherd. He knew that even though a shepherd was not a lofty position, it could sustain his son and by its very nature would require him to travel. And so, as a shepherd, Santiago sets upon the journey, a quest to discover his “Personal Legend.”
To me, this book is a blend of great story telling and self-empowerment advice. As Coelho puts it “to realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation.” It is here that The Alchemist can give the reader a true gift if they are willing to take it. People often question if they are on the right path to their own destiny. But Coelho reminds us through this beautiful tale that the gift we are all given is the journey. And when we tap into the universal current of life, every moment of our journey will lead us towards our destiny.
Read The Alchemist and discover where Santiago’s journey took him and along the way you may even discover where the universal current of life can take you.
